Liliana Robeson and Colombia Tropical

Cumbia dance/Colombian Vallenato, Washington and Montgomery Counties

Cumbia is a fusion of African, Spanish, and indigenous musical and dance traditions that developed along the Caribbean coast of Colombia during colonial times. Cumbia began as a courtship dance practiced among enslaved Africans, which was later mixed with native and European instruments and musical characteristics. Master dancer Liliana Robeson was born in Colombia and now lives in Hagerstown, Maryland, where she is teaching her apprentice, Anabella Victoriano. Liliana is accompanied by Colombia Tropical, a Vallenato group from Montgomery County. Vallenato features virtuosic accordion playing and is named for a valley in northern Colombia where it originated among cattle herders.
